A Club with 70+ Years of History
The Scarborough Bowls Club was formed in response to an advertisement placed by Mr. Alfred Charles Short in the Redcliffe Herald. An inaugural meeting of interested male citizens was held in December, 1955, where it was decided to proceed with establishing a bowls club. A special general meeting followed in January, 1956, during which office bearers for the 1956–1957 term were elected.
At this meeting, members agreed to purchase the land on which the club and bowling greens now stand for £1,650. The Redcliffe Bowls Club was undergoing reconstruction at the time, and its old clubhouse was relocated to the Scarborough site. Established as the Scarborough Men’s Bowls Club in January 1956, the club was later joined by the Scarborough Ladies Bowling Club in 1958.
For over 60 years, bowls clubs have provided a social hub for retirees, offering affordable recreation and community engagement through lawn bowls. This has been made possible through the dedication of volunteers, with women historically managing catering and men overseeing bar operations and other club functions.
